Today in 2nd Grade Kaleidoscope we continued our Middle Ages Unit. We played a math game using medieval dice and did a worksheet on less than, greater than, and equal to. We also did a castle building activity that required them to use a certain number of different shapes. If they finished, they had time to work on their shield of armor that we started on Tuesday.

Life Skills/Finacial Literacy
This week we have been talking about the 20-10 rule. That you shouldn't borrow more than 20% of your yearly net income, and your monthly payments shouldn't exceed 10% of your monthly net income. They are doing worksheets and activities that show how much an item really costs after the interest is paid.

We recently discussed the goddess Athena and her competition with Arachne. They were both skillful weavers and competed to see who was the best. Athena won and turned the boastful Arachne into a spider. We made a paper weave project with a spider on it to represent Arachne.

Kaleidoscope/Enrichment
We are still in our Greek mythology unit. We discussed Prometheus, who created men out of clay. He made these clay models look like gods, but he put into them bits and pieces of other creatures he had made already-the dog, the fox, the deer-so that this new creature, man, was a mixture of all these things. The students used clay to create their own perfect creature!
Life Skills/Financial Literacy
Life Skills:
We have been discussing interview techniques and resume writing skills. They will be writing their resumes today in class. They will turn them in Tuesday when they have their "job interview". We drew randomly to figure out our rent, car, phone, and utility bills, as well as our income; Some of them did not have the greatest luck and will be living on a very meager income. I tried to reassure them that having a low income DOES NOT hurt your grade whatsoever! Next week we will start on budgeting our money, keeping track of where our money goes, and buying a car!

Kaleidoscope/Enrichment
We discussed how the moon plays a role in the ocean tides. We discussed how the oceans have a higher density than fresh water. We tested the density of salt water by using an egg. We found that the egg sank in unsalted water and floated in the salt water.
We made and ocean scene using water colors and salt!
